15 -- what is your favorite harem anime?

Oh, I have so many smart-ass answers for this... I've seen some of the classic 'harem' series - Love Hina, Tenchi Muyo, etc. And a lot of reverse-harem shows, too, which might be a later question?

I'm not sure Kyou Kara Maou counts in either direction, but it springs to mind. *laughs* Also Angelique, Pretear, Hakuoki... I definitely have acquired a lot of 'pretty boy love interests galore!' shows. *laughs more*

Tenchi probably has had the most influence on me, but I know it's a series that hasn't necessarily aged well. ^^;; Any remaining art for Kalloway (the character) shows a strong resemblance to Ryoko and that's not accidental.

14 -- what is your favorite action anime?

How the fuck are we actually defining this? This is like 95% of what I watch...

You know what... since I haven't had a chance to really talk about it yet, let's go with Kiddy Grade. I adore Kiddy Grade, a fact that usually confuses anyone who is peripherally aware of the series but hasn't actually seen the whole thing. But Kiddy Grade is basically everything I like in anime, rolled into one. Action, drama, intrigue, pretty girls, pretty boys, robots, space fighting, humor, plenty of UST, amazing amounts of room for poking at the universe, etc. It is basically my anime happy place. ^_^

13 -- what is your favorite comedy anime?

Here is Greenwood is one of the most bizarre and charming series ever. It is hilarious, but it is not a straight comedy. In fact, the manga contains one of my go-to tear-jerker sequences... But when it's funny, it is very very funny.

Doujin Work is a short series based on a 4koma manga that is also hilarious. It is not afraid to go anywhere and (thankfully) often does. It chronicles the adventures of a group of doujin-making friends... working towards one of them trying to go pro as a manga-ka.

12 -- what is your favorite romance anime?

Wow, this is one of those questions where I'm stumped when it comes to anime, but I'll have trouble narrowing it down in regards to manga if I end up doing the meme again with the subject swapped.

So...

Actual Anime With A Lot of Romance In It Even If It Isn't A 'Romance' Anime - Vandread. Which isn't terribly romantic at all, but does have a lot of developing/established romantic subplots worth rooting for/enjoying. ^_^

Terrible Anime Based On Good Romance Manga - Alice in the Country of Hearts. The anime isn't worth watching, but the manga/games its based on are enjoyable and filled with gorgeous boys and it's fun to watch Alice's interactions with all of them (especially her love interest in each path). But the animated movie version just isn't worth it. Or only worth it if you're already a fan.

I do have some BL series like Gakuen Heaven, Sukisyo, etc. but I don't think I could list those as 'favorites'. I like Gakuen Heaven but think the main couple's romance is boring. ^^;;

11 -- what is your favorite drama anime?

This was a hard one, because most mecha anime qualifies as drama. While I don't know all the questions on this meme, I know there are a couple of mecha ones coming up. A lot of what I thought of that is very dramatic is also more romance or mecha or action or... whatever. So a straight-up 'first thought for this is drama' was really hard.

So here are two:

Planetes, which is a wonderful story about space-debris collectors. Both it and the manga made me cry so many times.

Starship Operators, about a warship of trainees basically financing their battles by being broadcast 24/7. As soon as anyone gets a name and any sort of subplot, expect them to die.

Both shows play space incredibly straight and while Planetes is the harder sci-fi, Starship Operators is the more brutal.

They are both very, very good.

10 -- what is your favorite 'moe' anime?

Hmm. I don't watch a lot of slice-of-life/girls-doing-everyday-things shows, which is where I think a lot of moe falls. I know Oreimo had a lot of moe elements, as does Eromanga Sensei (which I need to catch up on). And I did enjoy Girls Und Panzer and Gunslinger Girl, though for the latter I'd recommend the manga over the anime.

Whew-- Friday. This was a long, hot week.

I scheduled the window installation, which is still a month out (as expected). While this company seems relatively efficient, affordable, and I've heard very good things about the actual windows, their customer service has been just shy of atrocious. I had to beg the scheduling rep to stay on the phone to answer a couple of basic questions like 'how much space should I have clear around each window?' and whatnot. And this is after two other people coming out to measure, etc. and making disparaging and freakshow comments about my place.

Mostly, when I haven't been too groggy to do anything, I've been playing Brave Exvius. I'm not far into the story, since there are so many events to poke around in otherwise. So for every bit I progress the story, I'm burning through my energy gauge with grinding and whatnot. I did manage to score a Warrior of Light today, so I'm excited. I haven't had a chance to do much with him, though. I actually really like the BE original summons as much as anyone. There may be drabbles forthcoming. ^^;;

I want to try to do some writing this weekend. We'll see. It's been so long... I suppose I can get back to putting some stuff up on AO3 and whatnot, too? I probably have less than 5% of my total output up over there. *facepalms*

There's no time like the present!

09 -- name an anime character you absolutely hate.

'Hate' is a strong word for me. I have plenty of characters I really, really don't like. The few downright hates that come to mind are all from video game land...

And one definitely-anime example where a character had what could have been an endless amount of potential except it was completely disregarded and... wasted anyone on a character who had been established by the bulk of the previous canon to have absolutely no reason to exist.

Stellar Loussier from Gundam SEED Destiny.

And then whoops, like a thousand words of explanation! )

08 -- who is your favorite anime character?

Judging solely by merchandise owned, it's some sort of unholy tie between Athrun Zala and Gundam Exia.

I feel like whoever wrote this meme didn't consider there are people who've been watching anime for, y'know, decades.

I finally gave up on The Caligula Effect.

The Caligula Effect: 2017's first DNF! )

Right now I am playing Final Fantasy XII, Higurashi Chapter 3 and will move onto The Longest Journey once one of those is done. Then that will be it for July! No idea what August will bring...

(now I'm caught up!)

07 - have you ever watched an entire anime in one sitting?

Absolutely! The most recent, I'm pretty sure, is the newest Cyborg 009 that's on Netflix right now. I've watched straight thru some of the five-minute shows on Crunchyroll, if those count? Plenty of 3-6 episode OVAs. [personal profile] taichara and I got through Star Driver in something close to one sitting, and we also did Gundam Wing in about two days once? There was definitely food/sleep involved in the latter, though. But it was still fairly impressive. Boycritter and I have also done huge chunks of Naruto and Kenshin via Netflix - it's easy enough to cuddle up together and watch ~20 episodes overnight. ^^;;

Years and years ago, a group of friends I had always wanted to do some marathon events of 'the classics' like Escaflowne. Get a ton of food, etc. and spend ~12 hours watching Escaflowne, etc. Maybe Evangelion, whatever else they were into? IDK... But it never happened.

I honestly don't have much of an attention span anymore. I can put on a disc and watch it thru, but I'm also beading or picking up in the living room or whatever.

06 -- list your Top 5 anime OTPs.

Let's not even start with shipping... I like ships, I have ships, but I am so sick of shipping as a fandom thing. Also, I literally have, like, no OTPs. Not at the level of 'anyone else with these people is wrong'-fanaticism I've seen the term described with. I have some heavily-preferred pairings, sure, but I'm not inflexible. The closes thing to an OTP I have... one half has a kid with someone else, that's cool, and whatever. (Also, not anime. Also, I can think of two examples of that floating around in my fandoms... huh. Still not anime.)

06 -- Five rescue licenses that thankfully happened.

• Revolutionary Girl Utena - with the Blu-rays coming this year after a DVD release a few years back, Utena was a wonderful rescue license to hear about, since Central Park Media has been gone for aaaages. Also, the manga version had a gorgeous reissue a couple of months back.

• All of Gundam - with Bandai NA going under a few years back, Gundam in North America was looking very rocky. Luckily, Sunrise partnered with Nozomi/Rightstuf to put out everything in lovely new sets, including series we didn't think we'd ever get. Oh, and Gundam Wing on Blu-ray very soon!

• A ton of other Bandai stuff -- Outlaw Star, Escaflowne, Code Geass, etc. All rescued and recently put back in print. So many good old shows finally available. Still waiting on Dunbine, though.

• Martian Successor Nadesico - oh, c'mon, we all knew I'd pick a lot of mecha! Nadesico is a show that never quite knows what it wants to be, but it's good to see it back in print.

• Sailor Moon & Cardcaptor Sakura - not a surprise, either of these, but still very very welcome.

And:

One rescue license I'd love to see but probably will never happen -

pretty much everything I still have on VHS Holy shit. I was going to say the truly atrocious original Eat-Man anime, but Discotek put it out at the end of last year. I don't even words. So let's go with Final Fantasy: Legend of the Crystals. It'll never see the light of DVD or Blu-ray, but it will never be forgotten.

I've seen a bunch of character memes going around and sure, why not~ Snagged this one from [personal profile] taichara

Give me a character and I'll tell you...

• what they'd do if they had a kitten in their shorts
• what they'd do if sent on a multi-week camping trip
• their most fabulous moment in canon
• what they'd sing at karaoke (and how they'd do)
• what they think about in the shower
• what they'd do if someone appeared claiming to be their kid from the future
• what they'd do if someone appeared claiming to be their kid from the past
• what kind of hobbies they have
• if their hair color is natural and how I know
• if this character is dead, and if so, if they can get better

ETA: my characters are fair game too!

05 -- list your top 5 anime.

I can't even this prompt.

05 -- list five anime you'd show to someone new to anime

(in no order)
• Pretear
• Here is Greenwood
• Kino's Journey
• Generator Gawl
• Ayakashi ~ Bakeneko

Short things, which hold together, in a variety of genres which aren't entirely reliant on 'genre savvy'/knowledge of anime tropes while also introducing them.

The runner-up was Escaflowne, which is a bit long (given the lumpy bit it hits in the middle), but still came right to mind.

04 - if you could make a spin-off of any anime, what would it be?

Shockingly? not Astray!

The cheater option is 'the rest of Saint Seiya: Lost Canvas and its attached Gaidens', because I'd love to see the second half of the story animated.

Other than that - I still want the Tower of Druaga High School AU OVA, as hinted at in the series OPs.

So this morning I finished Ys Seven! This time around Adol is in AU northern Africa, making friends, influencing people, and surprisingly not getting shipwrecked despite securing passage on four boats. I know, I was surprised too. This is the last game in the Ys series focusing on Adol released in English, and I think the last Ys game I will play until Lacrymosa of Dana comes out in September. (Sorry, Ys Origin - I have too many games in my backlog!)

Adol secures passage on a boat and doesn't get shipwrecked? HOW CAN THIS BE. )

All right! Next up, I'm playing Higurashi Chapter 3 and Final Fantasy XII in part because [personal profile] larissa will likely beat down my door if I don't do FFXII. The Caligula Effect ... continues to be a work in progress sob.

Went to the small summer comic show today (and it was packed - far too packed for a church gymnasium) and picked up seven trades (from the $5 boxes) and two action figures. Trades were three TF, two Jem, a Back to the Future, and a Drizzt (since Drizzt is oddly tolerable in comic form). Action figures were a Zor Prime from Robotech (still on the card - we'll see how long that lasts) and a big Megaman NT/.EXE figure which seems to have a voice/soundbox but dead batteries. So... a better day than I was expecting!

I still need to get to the tool/hardware store if possible this weekend. The main thing I needed was a set of small hinges, because I broke my toolbox again and I'm not spending another $20 on replacing a slide that's obviously just going to break again. It's the bottom drawer, so I'm just going to do a bit of modification and it will no longer be a problem. I grabbed some cheap hinges at the grocery, just in case I don't get out shopping tomorrow. (But I would like to go buy more tools. Yay tools!)

I finished playing Tokyo Xanadu earlier this week but because work was brutal I have only now had the opportunity to write this up. Basically Tokyo Xanadu is what happens when the gameplay for Ys and the storywriting for Kiseki had a lovechild, and that lovechild went to school and hung out with the Persona kid for a bit and stuff rubbed off.

'Let me see ... Sweet, I have reception.' - Shinomiya Yuuki, doing what we all do when we arrive at a new place. )

Next up: a post for Ys Seven, and playing either Higurashi chapter 3, The Longest Journey, or the Final Fantasy XII remake!
